What Nobody Tells Black Women About Owning It

The first time I paid a vendor invoice with my own money, I kept the confirmation email open longer than I want to admit — the amount wasn't the issue. There was no finance department to check with, no boss to flag it to, and no endless budget for a redo if I got it wrong. Just me and a business that existed because I'd said it should.

Nobody tells you the real moment arrives with the first invoice — not the launch, not the first client.

Black Business Month runs on a familiar reel: the ribbon cutting, the founder photographed mid-laugh in front of her own logo. What it leaves out is the part where ownership stops being a milestone and starts being a condition you live inside, with no rotation off the clock.

For fifteen years, I built other people's rooms. Good rooms: funded, staffed, insured against my own mistakes. Ownership withdraws that net. Nobody says that part out loud when they're handing you the applause.

So this month, I'm not asking whether you can start something. Plenty of us can, and have, long before anyone made a hashtag of it. The real question is whether you're willing to be the last name on the lease, to carry a decision all the way through with no one behind you to catch it.

I chose it anyway. The fear didn't go anywhere. I simply got tired of handing my risk to someone else's balance sheet.
