Issue No. 02: What Are You Masking Simply Because You Make Everything Look Effortless?

Consider This — Issue No. 02
What are you masking simply because you make everything look effortless?
I've been sitting with that question for weeks. Not as an indictment. As an honest reflection. Because somewhere between managing every obstacle that comes my way and powering through, the list of things that truly belong to me is virtually non-existent. The much needed haircut remains unscheduled. The sketchbook I purchased at the start of the year, still naked six months in.
We talk a lot about burnout, yet less about the version that still looks functional. The slow erosion of what was once required to fill you back up. The pleasures and necessities you've deferred so often that you no longer experience it as a choice.
This issue is about reclaiming. No announcement required. No life overhaul. Just the quiet, deliberate act of putting yourself back on your own list — without the guilt that often arrives alongside it.
The guilt is worth acknowledging directly. It arrives because you've convinced everyone around you to expect that adjustments are easy. Changing that expectation feels uncomfortable. Selfish, even. It isn't any of those things. It is a correction.
You can't pour from a cup that spilled.
Love, B.
From the Journal
01 · The Second Act — The Mid-Year Reckoning
The intentions list at the top of the year had the same things on it that it always does. But when she finally asked why — honestly, without self-criticism — the answer wasn't discipline or ambition. It was where everything had been going instead. This piece is about the moment the carrying becomes visible. And what happens when you decide to put some of it down.
02 · The Standard — Saying No Early Is the Real Flex
Saying no early costs nothing and returns everything. The guilt, the social pressure, the financial drain of the yes you didn't mean. All of it arrives after the fact. This piece makes the case for the decision made in advance, before the pressure builds. And reframes declining not as withdrawal but as the beginning of a standard.
03 · Grown Woman IQ — The Conversation About Money You Keep Avoiding
The financial questions women in their 40s are quietly not asking: retirement readiness, the cost of caregiving, rebuilding after divorce. The avoidance makes sense. These questions carry weight and most women already know the honest answers will require something of them. This piece is about understanding what's actually at the root of the avoidance and why getting there is the only thing that moves you forward.
Yes & No This Week
Yes to — course correcting overdue maintenance. The me-time reframe: what you call indulgence may actually be infrastructure. The things that keep you functioning at the level everyone else has come to depend on. You cannot maintain the standard for others that you're unwilling to hold for yourself first.
No to — energy that arrives as performance and leaves as exhaustion. You know the kind. The conversation that's never quite an exchange. The presence that fills every room and somehow leaves you emptier for it. Recognizing the source doesn't require an announcement. It just requires a decision.
Worth Having
Reclaiming your hidden arts. Music and drawing were never just hobbies. They are languages, ways of thinking and feeling that most of us set aside without realizing what we were giving up. I'm returning to the piano and to sketching, making a deliberate effort to show up for both. Not for an audience. Not for improvement in any measurable sense. For the particular kind of clarity that only comes when you return to something that was always distinctly yours. Whatever your hidden art is, find your way back to it. It has been waiting.
