The Other Kind of Rich

Money is peace. It reduces friction, turns emergencies into inconveniences, lowers the temperature, and buys you time to think.

There are two kinds of rich. The kind that's visible — the upgrades, the aesthetics, the financed version of having it together. And the kind that's felt: the steady confidence of knowing you have room to decide.

Many of us have spent years building the first kind. The second is the one I'm more interested in now.

So what does the second kind actually look like?

Functional wealth has a specific texture. It's a runway: months of breathing room, not a vibe. It's margin: money and time that aren't fully spoken for. It's optionality: the ability to pause, renegotiate, or walk away when you need to.

I know what the other version feels like. A client pays late and the entire month shifts. An unexpected car expense lands and you're doing math that has nothing to do with the actual number; it has to do with what else is already spoken for. What you're really looking at is a margin problem.

And once you've lived inside that long enough, building toward the other kind of rich stops feeling optional. It becomes the standard worth funding.

None of that shows up in a feed. All of it changes how you move through a room.

Having the most rarely has anything to do with it. What separates the women who have this kind of rich is whether they've stopped confusing access with ownership, and upgrades with stability.

In this season, rich is less about what you can buy and more about what you can decline.
